Quick answers

How do I calculate my GPA?

Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add them up, then divide by the total credit hours. Example: an A (4.00) for 3 credits, a B (3.00) for 3 credits and a B+ (3.33) for 4 credits gives 34.32 ÷ 10 = a GPA of 3.43.

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA is your pointer for one semester. CGPA is the pointer across every semester so far, weighted by credit hours. Example: a CGPA of 3.20 over 30 credits, plus a GPA of 3.43 over 10 credits, becomes a CGPA of 3.26.

Does a failed course count towards CGPA?

Yes. A fail carries 0 grade points but its credit hours still count, so it pulls that semester's GPA down. How a repeat grade replaces the original differs between universities, so check your academic regulations.

Is the grading scale the same at every university?

No. The formula is the same, but the grade points differ. An A-, for example, is worth 3.67 (JPPKK, Kolej Matrikulasi, Taylor's University, grade legend January 2024 onwards, grade legend September 2017 onwards, UIAM / IIUM, UKM, UMPSA, UMS, UNIMAS, USM, UniSZA, UTM, UiTM, UTAR) or 3.70 (UM, UMK, UTeM) or 3.75 (UniMAP, UMT, UPSI, UPM). Pick your university in the calculator so the right scale is used.

What GPA do I need for the Dean's List?

Each university sets its own threshold. Published semester GPA thresholds: MMU 3.67, Taylor's University 3.50, UIAM / IIUM 3.50, UKM 3.67, UM 3.70, UMK 3.70, UMPSA 3.50, UMS 3.50, UNIMAS 3.50, UMT 3.50, UPSI 3.50, UPM 3.75, UniSZA 3.50, UTeM 3.50, UTM 3.67, UiTM 3.50, UTHM 3.50, UTAR 3.60. Most also require a minimum credit load and no failed course that semester.
