Rope Access Technician

Works at height on ropes to inspect, repair, clean or paint oil and gas platforms, tanks, bridges and high-rise buildings, usually combined with a trade such as welding, painting or NDT inspection. Entry is through a short IRATA Level 1 course (about 5 days) from age 18.

You can enter this career straight after SPM. A degree is optional, not required.

How people get into it here
Finish SPM, ideally learn a trade (e.g. SKM in welding, painting/blasting or mechanical work at an ILP or ADTEC) → at 18, take IRATA Level 1 at an approved training centre (e.g. in Johor Bahru, Terengganu or Miri) and a NIOSH offshore safety course such as BOSIET for O&G work → work under a Level 3 supervisor and log hours. After 1,000 logged hours and a year of experience you can upgrade to Level 2, then Level 3.
