Gas Fitter (Competent Person)

Installs, tests, repairs and maintains piped gas systems (natural gas and LPG) in homes, restaurants, factories and commercial buildings. To do this legally you must be certified by Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Energy Commission) as a gas competent person, starting as a Gas Fitter Class III.

You can enter this career straight after SPM. A degree is optional, not required.

How people get into it here
SPM → work at least a year on gas pipelines or installations as an assistant with a registered gas contractor → apply to Suruhanjaya Tenaga (online OAS system) and pass its written exam and interview for Gas Fitter Class III; passing an ST-recognised gas course (e.g. UTM Gas Technology Centre or Institut Kemahiran MARA) can exempt you from the written exam → after 2 years as Class III you can move up to Class II, and after 2 years as Class II to Class I. With an engineering diploma or degree and 2 years of experience you can become a Gas Engineering Supervisor instead.
