Rebar Worker (Bar Bender)
Skilled Trades
Position and secure steel bars or mesh in concrete forms in order to reinforce concrete. Use a variety of fasteners, rod-bending machines, blowtorches, and hand tools. Includes rod busters.
You can enter this career straight after SPM. A degree is optional, not required.
In Malaysia
Bar benders cut, bend and tie steel reinforcement bars (tetulang) for concrete slabs, beams and columns, and nearly every building and infrastructure site needs them. The trade has depended heavily on foreign workers, so CIDB is training and certifying Malaysians (Bar Bender Level 1/2). Every site worker must be registered with CIDB.

- After SPM, join CIDB's sponsored youth skills programme (ages 17–35) or train on site. Complete the SICW safety induction to register as construction personnel, then sit CIDB's Bar Bender Level 1 and Level 2 skills certification (SKKP). Experienced bar benders can move up to foreman or site supervisor.

What you'd do all day

- 1Determine quantities, sizes, shapes, and locations of reinforcing rods from blueprints, sketches, or oral instructions.
- 2Space and fasten together rods in forms according to blueprints, using wire and pliers.
- 3Position and secure steel bars, rods, cables, or mesh in concrete forms, using fasteners, rod-bending machines, blowtorches, or hand tools.
- 4Place blocks under rebar to hold the bars off the deck when reinforcing floors.
- 5Cut rods to required lengths, using metal shears, hacksaws, bar cutters, or acetylene torches.
- 6Cut and fit wire mesh or fabric, using hooked rods, and position fabric or mesh in concrete to reinforce concrete.
- 7Bend steel rods with hand tools or rod-bending machines and weld them with arc-welding equipment.
