PTPTN WPP: What the RM1,500 Advance Is, Who Gets It and How to Cash It

Wang Pendahuluan Pinjaman (WPP) is a RM1,500 advance PTPTN gives eligible new students before they register at a public university or polytechnic. It is for Malaysian students whose parent, guardian or own name is on the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) list. It is not free money: it is part of your loan, recovered at RM500 a semester.

Wang Pendahuluan Pinjaman (WPP) is a RM1,500 advance from PTPTN, given to eligible new students to help with the cost of getting ready before registering at a public university (IPTA) or polytechnic. The amount and conditions below are as published on the PTPTN portal and in its 2026 media statements, read on 1 October 2026.

The most important thing to understand first: WPP is not a grant. PTPTN's own FAQ answers the question "Is WPP given for free?" with "No".

Who qualifies

PTPTN lists five conditions:

  1. You agreed to receive WPP — this is done when you apply for admission, through UPUOnline or the institution's own admission portal.
  2. You are a Malaysian citizen.
  3. Your parent, guardian or you yourself are a recipient of Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR).
  4. You are offered a full-time Diploma or Bachelor's Degree at an IPTA or polytechnic only.
  5. You have no outstanding WPP debt.

There is no appeal on the STR condition. PTPTN states that WPP is considered only for students whose guardian, or who themselves, receive STR.

Private institutions: a PTPTN article states that from January 2021 WPP was extended to B40 students in full-time diploma programmes (science and arts) at private institutions (IPTS) that agree to accept WPP, and that these students apply for it when applying for the loan in the first application batch. Whether your IPTS takes part is something to confirm with the institution and PTPTN.

You do not apply separately

For IPTA and polytechnic students there is no WPP form. PTPTN says the "application" is your agreement to receive WPP, given during your admission application. PTPTN then offers it to those who meet the conditions and notifies you by SMS and email, using the phone number and email you gave in that admission application.

This is why the tick box in your UPU application matters. See the UPU helper if you are applying in a coming cycle.

If you are in the September 2026 group and have not cashed yours, the warrant expires on 3 November 2026.

How to check and cash it

  1. Log in to myPTPTN and open Perkhidmatan > Pinjaman > Semakan Wang Pendahuluan Pinjaman (WPP), then click Semak.
  2. If you are successful, print the WPP offer letter (warrant). Make sure your IC number and warrant number appear on it — PTPTN says an incomplete printout cannot be cashed and must be reprinted.
  3. Go to any Bank Islam counter with the printed letter and your MyKad. You must go yourself; a representative is not allowed.
  4. Cash it within two months of the date on the offer letter.

After cashing, you may deposit the money into your own savings account. If your fingerprint cannot be read, PTPTN says you can still cash it with another supporting document such as a driving licence, birth certificate or your institution's offer letter. If your MyKad is lost, bring the temporary identity card issued by JPN.

How it is repaid

PTPTN states that WPP is part of the loan, given in advance before you register. Once your PTPTN loan is approved, RM500 is deducted automatically from your loan each semester. That is why your early payouts are smaller than you expect — explained in when PTPTN money comes in.

Two consequences follow:

  • You still need to apply for the loan itself. WPP does not replace the application. Follow how to apply for PTPTN after getting an offer on the dates set for your institution.
  • If you do not take up the place, do not cash it. PTPTN says WPP may not be cashed if you do not continue at the institution or in the course offered. If it was already cashed, you must repay it within eight months of the warrant's expiry date, and a ta'widh (late charge) of 1% a year applies to the unpaid balance from the ninth month.

An unsettled WPP debt also follows you: it blocks a future WPP, and PTPTN lists it among the reasons a first-class repayment exemption may not cover the whole loan.

Should you take it?

If you need it for registration, transport or a deposit, it is there for exactly that. If you do not, remember it is borrowed money arriving early, not extra money. Students from households in the eKasih database should also read about the BAeK PTPTN scholarship, and everyone should keep checking the scholarships list.

The amount, conditions and dates are set per intake and may change; verify on the official PTPTN portal or in myPTPTN.

Malaysian universities all use a 4.00 scale, but the points behind each letter differ: A- is 3.67 at UiTM, UKM, UTM and IIUM, 3.70 at UM and 3.750 at UPM. Only some scales have an A+, the pass grade ranges from C to D, and unlike SPM every grade is weighted by credit hours.
