The KPM Matriculation Programme runs at 15 matriculation colleges and 2 MARA colleges, 17 in total. Three of them are engineering colleges, in Kedah, Pahang and Johor. Which college you can be placed at depends first on your stream, and placement is decided by the Matriculation Division, not chosen freely by the student.

Which college offers which stream

Your stream narrows the list before anything else does.

So an Engineering student will be in Pendang, Bandar Jengka or Pontian, and a JPPro student will be in Banting. Read the streams and subjects guide before you pick a stream for its location.

Students who want to continue tahfiz can take Hifz Al-Quran only in the Science and Accounting streams at KM Kelantan, KM Negeri Sembilan, KM Kedah and KM Johor, subject to vacancy.

Can you choose your college?

Not in the way you choose a university in UPU. The guide to filling in the application form on the official portal shows three college preferences, and states plainly that placement depends on vacancies and logistics and that you are not guaranteed the college you chose. Check the current form when you apply, because its layout changes between cycles.

Some placement rules are written down in the FAQ:

  • Engineering, students from Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan: priority placement at KM Kejuruteraan Johor, subject to vacancy.
  • JPPro: all students are placed at KM Selangor.
  • Aliran within Science (Sains Hayat, Sains Fizikal or Sains Teknologi) is set by the college based on your SPM results.

Can you change college after the offer?

The FAQ's answer is no, with three exceptions:

  1. You need regular medical treatment for a long-term chronic illness.
  2. Your siblings have been placed at different matriculation colleges.
  3. Your guardian has been transferred between the Peninsula and Sabah or Sarawak.

Requests are made online at the matriculation portal after offers are announced, and approval depends on vacancies. Wanting to be closer to home is not on the list.

Living there

All students must stay in the hostel provided. Tuition and accommodation are borne by the government. Students from Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan who are placed in the Peninsula can claim one return flight for the year of study. Those placed at KM Sarawak or KM Labuan cannot. The money side is covered in matriculation allowance and fees.

Because you cannot count on a particular college, decide on the programme first. If living away from home is the deciding factor for you, compare with STPM at a local school and the other routes on the matriculation pathway page. Entry grades for each stream are in matriculation requirements.

Changing University in Malaysia: Routes, Credit Transfer and Funding

There is no transfer button between Malaysian universities. You apply to the new university as a new applicant, through UPU or directly, and then ask it to transfer credits. MQA's rules require at least a grade C and 80% course equivalence, and a bachelor's student must still spend at least one year at the new university. PTPTN will only lend again at the same level once the earlier loan is settled.

Deferring University Study in Malaysia: Rules, Limits and PTPTN

Deferring is a formal application, not simply staying away. Universities such as UKM and UPM cap deferment at four semesters, and UiTM caps special leave for full-time students at two. Whether the semester still counts towards your study period depends on the university and the reason, and PTPTN does not disburse your loan for a semester you defer.

Changing Course at a Malaysian University: Rules, Steps and PTPTN

You can, but not at every university and not at any time. UKM, UPM and UTM allow one change of programme under set conditions, while UiTM's academic regulations (2021 amendment) do not allow it for full-time students. Your old CGPA is usually not carried over, and PTPTN only considers continuing your loan if the change does not make you repeat a semester.
