Matriculation Streams and Subject Packages: What Each One Leads To
KPM Matriculation has five streams: Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Accounting and Professional Accounting (JPPro). Science is split into three subject packages, which the official 2026/2027 documents call aliran Sains Hayat, Sains Fizikal and Sains Teknologi rather than modules. Each package has four core subjects, and the package decides which degrees you can apply for later.

Your seniors probably talk about "Modul I, II and III". The Matriculation Division's FAQ for the 2026/2027 session, updated on 6 January 2026, does not use those labels. It names each Science package as an aliran. The idea is the same: a fixed set of four core subjects. The names below are the official ones.
The five streams
| Stream | Aliran | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Science | Sains Hayat, Sains Fizikal, Sains Teknologi | Two semesters or four semesters |
| Computer Science | None | Two semesters |
| Engineering | Asas Kejuruteraan, Awam, Elektrik & Elektronik, Mekanikal | Two semesters |
| Accounting | None | Two semesters |
| Professional Accounting (JPPro) | None | Two semesters |
Entry grades for each one are in matriculation requirements.
Core subjects in each package
Every package has four core subjects.
| Stream and aliran | Core subjects |
|---|---|
| Science: Sains Hayat | Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology |
| Science: Sains Fizikal | Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science |
| Science: Sains Teknologi | Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science |
| Computer Science | Mathematics, Computer Programming, Database Fundamentals, Digital Technology |
| Engineering: Asas | Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Asas Kejuruteraan |
| Engineering: Awam | Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Civil Engineering |
| Engineering: Elektrik & Elektronik | Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Electrical & Electronic Engineering |
| Engineering: Mekanikal | Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering |
| Accounting | Mathematics, Accounting, Economics, Business Management |
| JPPro | Mathematics, Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Business and Technology |
On top of the core subjects, everyone takes four compulsory subjects: English, Pengajian Am Matrikulasi, Pendidikan Islam or Moral, and co-curriculum or Hifz Al-Quran.
Notice what each Science aliran leaves out. Sains Fizikal has no Biology. Sains Teknologi has no Physics. Only Sains Hayat keeps all three pure sciences.
Which degrees each one leads to
These are the fields the FAQ lists for each stream. The list ends with "and others" in every case, and each university still sets its own subject requirements.
| Stream | Degree fields named in the FAQ |
|---|---|
| Sains Hayat | Medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, science, engineering, education, IT, architecture, nursing, forensic science, allied health |
| Sains Fizikal | Engineering, IT, education, cyber security, biotechnology, R&D, artificial intelligence |
| Sains Teknologi | IT, medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, cyber security, artificial intelligence |
| Computer Science | Computer science, software engineering, IT, information systems, AI, cyber security, data science |
| Engineering | Civil, mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering, aeronautical engineering, petroleum and gas engineering, occupational safety and health, architecture |
| Accounting | Accounting, entrepreneurship, business administration, finance and banking, economics and marketing, human resource management, risk management, insurance |
| JPPro | ACCA professional qualification at UiTM Shah Alam |
You do not pick your Science aliran
The FAQ is explicit: the aliran within the Science stream is set by the college, based on your SPM results. You apply for the Science stream, not for Sains Hayat.
That matters if you are aiming at a degree with a strict subject requirement. Before you accept, check the requirement for your target degree in the UPU programme listing, and ask the college which aliran you have been given. See how to read UPU course requirements.
Changing stream
A stream change can be requested online within five days after offers are announced, subject to vacancies and requirements. The one exception is Science to Accounting, which can be arranged at the college after you register in person.
How JPPro is different
JPPro is a one-year course at Kolej Matrikulasi Selangor, followed by two and a half years at UiTM, built with UiTM and ACCA Malaysia. Students sit three ACCA papers during the matriculation year. The FAQ presents it as a route to qualifying as a chartered accountant at about 25, against about 27 on the usual route. JPPro students can still move to a degree in accounting, management or economics instead. Entry needs an aptitude test and interview, and the stream is open to Bumiputera students only. It also carries extra ACCA costs, covered in matriculation allowance and fees.
How you are assessed
Three components: continuous assessment (assignments, lab reports, presentations), a summative test called UPS, and the semester examination called PSPM. Results are reported as a semester GPA and a cumulative CGPA. That CGPA is what you carry into UPU for degree entry.
Choosing
Work backwards from the degree, not forwards from the stream that sounds easiest.
- Take the career interest quiz if you have no field in mind yet.
- Look up the degree in the programme catalogue and note its required subjects.
- Pick the stream whose core subjects cover them.
- Check which colleges offer that stream.
If you are weighing this against a university foundation, see matrikulasi or asasi.

Changing University in Malaysia: Routes, Credit Transfer and Funding
There is no transfer button between Malaysian universities. You apply to the new university as a new applicant, through UPU or directly, and then ask it to transfer credits. MQA's rules require at least a grade C and 80% course equivalence, and a bachelor's student must still spend at least one year at the new university. PTPTN will only lend again at the same level once the earlier loan is settled.

Deferring University Study in Malaysia: Rules, Limits and PTPTN
Deferring is a formal application, not simply staying away. Universities such as UKM and UPM cap deferment at four semesters, and UiTM caps special leave for full-time students at two. Whether the semester still counts towards your study period depends on the university and the reason, and PTPTN does not disburse your loan for a semester you defer.

Changing Course at a Malaysian University: Rules, Steps and PTPTN
You can, but not at every university and not at any time. UKM, UPM and UTM allow one change of programme under set conditions, while UiTM's academic regulations (2021 amendment) do not allow it for full-time students. Your old CGPA is usually not carried over, and PTPTN only considers continuing your loan if the change does not make you repeat a semester.
