University Credit Hours in Malaysia: Meaning, Semester Load and CGPA

One credit equals 40 hours of student learning time across a semester under the Malaysian Qualifications Framework, counting lectures, tutorials, assignments, self-study and exams. A diploma needs at least 90 credits and a bachelor's degree at least 120. Most public universities set a normal load of about 12 to 20 credits a semester, and each course's credits decide how heavily its grade counts in your CGPA.

Every course you register for carries a credit value. It tells you how much work the course is, how many courses you can take at once, and how hard a bad grade will hit your CGPA.

What one credit means

The Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF), published by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), defines a credit as a measure of academic load. One credit equals 40 notional learning hours.

Those hours are not all class time. The MQF counts lectures, tutorials, practicals, self-study, fieldwork, and preparing for and sitting examinations.

UTM's academic regulations set one credit of lecture as 14 meetings in a semester, and one credit of lab, studio, project or fieldwork as 28 to 40 hours of meetings. UiTM's regulations describe one credit unit as 40 hours of student learning over a 14-week semester.

So a 3-credit course is about 120 hours of work, only part of it in the lecture hall.

How many credits you need to graduate

QualificationMinimum credits under the MQF
Diploma (Level 4)90
Bachelor's degree (Level 6)120

These are minimums. The MQF says higher requirements are set for particular fields and professional programmes, so check your faculty handbook for your programme's total. Diploma holders entering a degree should also read how credit transfer works.

How many credits you can take in a semester

Each university sets its own limits in its academic regulations.

UniversityMinimum per normal semesterMaximum per normal semester
UTM (regulations, 2023 edition)1218; up to 21 with the dean's permission
UiTM (regulations, 2021 amendment)1220; exceptions with the dean's or rector's approval
UniSZA (2025/2026 regulations)1220; more with the dean's permission and a CGPA of at least 2.50

MQA's guidance to institutions is that a full-time programme with a normal 17-week semester, counting revision and exam weeks, may offer at most 20 credits a semester.

A quick sum shows why. Fifteen credits is 600 hours of learning. Spread over 17 weeks, that is about 35 hours a week, which is a full-time job. Keep that in mind before taking on part-time work.

Students in academic difficulty get a lower cap: 9 to 12 credits at UTM for those on conditional standing, and 12 at UMPSA for a CGPA below 2.00.

Dropping a course

There are usually two separate windows.

  • Add and drop. Early in the semester you can change your registration. UniSZA allows this within two weeks of the first day of the semester; UNIMAS until the fourth week of lectures.
  • Withdrawal. After that, you may be able to withdraw from a course. At UTM the application must reach the faculty by the last working day of week eight, you must stay at or above the minimum credit load unless the dean allows otherwise, and the status TD (Tarik Diri) is recorded on your results slip and transcript.

Check both dates in your own academic calendar in the first week.

Failing a course

At UTM, a failed core or general course must be repeated until you pass. For CGPA purposes the latest grade replaces the earlier one. A failed elective can be repeated or replaced with a different elective, but if you replace it, the failed grade stays in your CGPA. UMPSA's regulations likewise state that the latest passing grade replaces the earlier fail.

Rules differ, though. UiTM's regulations list failing the same course for the third time as a ground for dismissal, so read your own university's section on failed courses.

How credits feed your CGPA

A GPA is a weighted average. UTM's regulations give the formula: total grade points for the semester divided by total credits counted. CGPA does the same across all semesters.

Each course contributes its grade point multiplied by its credits. This illustration assumes A is 4.00, B is 3.00 and C is 2.00; your university's scale may differ.

CourseCreditsGradeGrade point × credits
Course P3A12.00
Course Q4B12.00
Course R3C6.00
Total1030.00

GPA = 30.00 ÷ 10 = 3.00.

Swap the B and the C, so the C falls on the 4-credit course, and the total becomes 29.00, giving 2.90. The grades are the same but the GPA is lower, because the weaker grade sat on the heavier course. A fail adds its credits to the divisor and nothing to the total.

Run your own numbers in the CGPA calculator. The threshold to watch is 2.00: at UTM a CGPA of 2.00 or above is good standing, 1.70 to below 2.00 is conditional standing, and below 1.70 means dismissal.

Faculties usually brief new students on course registration during orientation week.

Credit limits, withdrawal deadlines and repeat rules are set by each university's Senate and are revised from time to time. Verify them in your own university's current academic regulations and faculty handbook.

Frequently asked questions

What does one credit hour mean at a Malaysian university?
Under the Malaysian Qualifications Framework, one credit equals 40 notional learning hours across a semester. That total includes lectures, tutorials, practicals, assignments, self-study and examinations, so class time is only part of it.
How many credit hours do I need to graduate with a diploma or degree?
The MQF minimum is 90 credits for a diploma and 120 credits for a bachelor's degree. Programmes in particular fields or with professional accreditation can require more, and your faculty handbook states the exact total.
What is the maximum number of credit hours per semester?
It depends on the university. UTM's regulations allow 12 to 18 credits and up to 21 with the dean's permission, while UiTM's 2021 regulations and UniSZA's 2025/2026 regulations set 12 to 20, with more only by approval.
What happens to my CGPA if I fail a course?
The failed course's credits count in the divisor while adding no grade points, so your CGPA drops. At UTM and UMPSA, when you repeat and pass, the latest grade replaces the earlier one in the calculation; check your own university's rule.
Can I drop a course in the middle of the semester?
Often yes, within a deadline. At UTM, a course withdrawal must be submitted by the last working day of week eight and is recorded as TD on the transcript, and you must normally stay above the minimum credit load.

University Grading Systems in Malaysia Compared: Grade Points by University

Malaysian universities all use a 4.00 scale, but the points behind each letter differ: A- is 3.67 at UiTM, UKM, UTM and IIUM, 3.70 at UM and 3.750 at UPM. Only some scales have an A+, the pass grade ranges from C to D, and unlike SPM every grade is weighted by credit hours.
