Becoming a Teacher Straight After SPM: The IPG Route
PISMP at an Institut Pendidikan Guru takes you from SPM to a teaching degree with a path into government service, and it runs on its own calendar — applications opened 12 March 2026, aptitude testing in April, physical test and interview in early May, and registration on 10 August 2026. It is the most selective and most structured route in this article, and it is not applied for through UPU.

Teaching is one of the few professions in Malaysia you can enter on a single, continuous track straight from SPM. The Program Ijazah Sarjana Muda Perguruan (PISMP), run at the Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) network, takes SPM leavers through a preparatory phase and into a four-year teaching degree.
It also runs on a calendar of its own, entirely separate from UPU, with a selection process most students are not expecting.
The 2026 timeline
| Stage | Date |
|---|---|
| Applications open | 12 March 2026, 10am |
| Applications close | 2 April 2026 |
| Eligible candidates for e-UKCG announced | 9 April 2026 |
| UKCG online test | 15 – 17 April 2026 |
| Physical fitness test (UKF) and interview | 3 – 8 May 2026 |
| Registration at IPG | 10 August 2026 |
Note two things. First, applications opened before SPM results on 31 March and closed two days after. Second, the process runs five months from application to registration, with three separate selection stages.
The 2026 intake accepted applications from SPM leavers of 2023, 2024 and 2025 — so a leaver from an earlier year is not shut out.
The selection stages, and what each is really testing
UKCG (Ujian Kelayakan Calon Guru). An online aptitude test for teaching candidates. It is not a subject exam; it is closer to a screening of reasoning and suitability for the profession. You cannot cram it in a week, and you should not try to answer it as the person you think they want.
UKF, the physical fitness test. Teaching is a physically demanding job in ways students underestimate — standing all day, co-curricular duties, school camps. Prepare for this like you would for any fitness test; candidates are eliminated here every year.
The interview. The one question behind all the others is whether you have any real idea what the job is. Candidates who have tutored, coached, run a class activity, or helped in a classroom answer differently from candidates who have not.
What you are committing to
PISMP is a degree that leads into government teaching service, with the posting arrangements that implies — including the possibility of being posted anywhere in Malaysia, including rural Sabah and Sarawak. For many trainees this is the best part of the job; for some it is a genuine shock.
Be clear-eyed about it before you apply, because the programme is a long commitment with a service arrangement attached.
If IPG does not work out
You can still teach. Other routes exist:
- An education degree at a public university through UPU, then registration.
- A subject degree followed by a postgraduate teaching qualification.
- Private and international schools, which set their own hiring requirements.
- Early childhood education diplomas, which lead into a growing sector.
Compare entry requirements and duration across all the teaching routes on the IPG pathway page, and look at what teaching actually pays and how demand is trending on the careers pages.
Who this route suits
Students who are certain, early, that they want to teach — and who want the training, the degree and the employment route to be one continuous decision rather than three. The trade is flexibility: PISMP is difficult to enter and it points at one profession.
If you are not sure yet, a subject degree keeps teaching available while keeping other doors open. If you are sure, this is the most direct line into the classroom the system offers.
Dates are for the 2026 intake as published in the official PISMP announcement. Application windows change annually — confirm on the official IPG and MOE portals.
