MUET Format (CEFR-Aligned): Four Papers, Scores, Bands and Validity

MUET has four papers: Listening (50 minutes), Speaking (30 minutes), Reading (75 minutes) and Writing (75 minutes). Each carries 25% and a maximum score of 90, giving an aggregated score out of 360 that is converted to a band from 1.0 to 5+ aligned to CEFR levels A2 to C1+. A result is valid for five years from the date it is released.

The MUET you sit today is the CEFR-aligned version. Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia (MPM) states that its current test specification applies from Session 1 2021 onwards until further notice. If a senior describes a different paper structure or band scale, they are describing the old test.

All four skills count equally. No single paper carries the band, so a weak paper costs exactly as much as a strong one earns.

In a regular session, Listening, Reading and Writing are taken on one day, and the Speaking test is scheduled separately over about two weeks before it.

What each paper asks

Listening (800/1). 30 questions in five parts, built on dialogues and monologues. Questions are multiple choice, with one multiple-matching part. Every recording is played twice.

Speaking (800/2). Conducted in groups of two to four candidates. Part 1 is an individual presentation: two minutes to prepare and up to two minutes to speak on a written prompt. Part 2 is a group discussion on a related topic, using a question with five prompts in a mind map: three minutes to prepare, then 8 to 12 minutes of discussion for a group of four (less for smaller groups).

Reading (800/3). 40 questions in seven parts, covering multiple matching, multiple-choice questions and a gapped text with missing sentences.

Writing (800/4). Two tasks. Task 1 is a reply to a letter or email of at least 100 words, with about 25 minutes advised. Task 2 is an essay of at least 250 words (discursive, argumentative or problem-solution), with about 50 minutes advised.

Three practical readings of this table:

  • There are half bands. The scale has nine steps, including 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5. A programme that asks for Band 3.5 is asking for at least 164 marks.
  • There is no fail. Any score from 1 upwards earns a band. What matters is whether the band meets your programme's requirement.
  • The jumps are not even. Band 3.0 starts at 123, Band 4.0 at 211, Band 5.0 at 294. Moving from 3.0 to 4.0 means finding about 88 more marks across four papers, roughly 22 a paper.

To see what band you need, read the minimum MUET band guide.

Rules that surprise candidates

  • You must attempt all four papers. MPM's regulations say no certificate is awarded to a candidate who does not attempt all four components. Missing the speaking slot means no band at all.
  • There is no entry requirement. Anyone may register, and you can sit again in a later session to improve.
  • The result is valid for five years from the date the result is released, not from the date you sat. UPU's general requirement for 2026/2027 refers to this same five-year validity.
  • The certificate is digital. MPM issues an e-certificate (e-Sijil) through its portal rather than posting a printed one. The 2026 registration guide says the download is free for two years after the results are released, RM20 after that, and a printed copy costs RM60. Download and keep it as soon as it is available.

Regular sessions, MoD and MeX use the same test

MPM states that MUET on Demand uses the same regulations, test specification, format and standard of papers as the regular sessions, and its guides list the same four papers for MUET Express. The band you get is the same qualification whichever route you choose; only dates, fees and speed differ. See MUET on Demand and the MUET 2027 dates.

Using the format to prepare

Because the weighting is equal, the efficient plan is to find your weakest paper and work there first. MPM publishes the full test specification and a set of sample questions on its portal free of charge, and they are the most reliable practice material. For how a band fits into your application, go back to the MUET band guide and the programmes catalogue.

Source note: paper structure, weighting, scores, band table and validity are from Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia's MUET Regulations and Test Specifications (applies from Session 1 2021) and its band description; certificate rules are from MPM's registration guide for MUET 2026. MPM can revise the specification, so verify on the official MPM portal.

Frequently asked questions

How many papers are there in MUET?
Four: Listening (50 minutes), Speaking (30 minutes), Reading (75 minutes) and Writing (75 minutes). Each is worth 25% and a maximum of 90 marks, for an aggregated score out of 360.
What score do I need for MUET Band 4?
Band 4.0 is an aggregated score of 211 to 257 out of 360, and Band 4.5 is 258 to 293, according to MPM's test specification. Both correspond to CEFR B2.
How long is a MUET result valid?
Five years from the date the result is released, according to MPM's regulations. After that you need to sit the test again if a university or programme requires a valid result.
Can you fail MUET?
There is no fail grade: any aggregated score from 1 to 360 is reported as a band from 1.0 to 5+. However, you get no certificate if you do not attempt all four papers.

University Grading Systems in Malaysia Compared: Grade Points by University

Malaysian universities all use a 4.00 scale, but the points behind each letter differ: A- is 3.67 at UiTM, UKM, UTM and IIUM, 3.70 at UM and 3.750 at UPM. Only some scales have an A+, the pass grade ranges from C to D, and unlike SPM every grade is weighted by credit hours.

Dean's List Requirements in Malaysian Universities: GPA and Credit Rules

Most Malaysian public universities award the Dean's List for a semester GPA of 3.50 with at least 12 credits, but UM and UMK ask for 3.70, UKM and UTM for 3.67, and UPM for 3.750. A repeated course, a pass/fail course or a disciplinary record can disqualify you even when the GPA is high enough.

How to Calculate GPA and CGPA (Pointer): Formula and Worked Example

GPA is the total of (grade point × credit hours) for one semester divided by that semester's credit hours; CGPA is the same sum across every semester divided by all credit hours. It is not the average of your semester GPAs. How a failed or repeated course is counted depends on your university's regulations.
