Is Computer Science Still Worth It in Malaysia?

Computer science is still worth it in Malaysia for students who are willing to build real technical ability. It is less worth it for students who expect the degree alone to create a tech career. Employers increasingly want projects, internships and practical tools.

Demand is real, but standards are rising

Software, data, cloud, cybersecurity and AI-related roles remain strong. But more students are entering the field, so a bare degree is not enough. You need proof: GitHub, apps, data projects, security labs or internships.

AI changes the baseline

AI does not remove the need for computing graduates; it raises expectations. MOHE has stressed AI and data literacy across higher education, which means CS students must go beyond basic coding and learn how to use AI responsibly in workflows. Source: The Star on AI skills.

Who should choose CS

Choose it if you enjoy solving abstract problems, debugging, systems, data or building tools. Do not choose it only because someone told you tech pays well. The first year can be rough if you dislike logical problem-solving.

How to stand out

Build one useful project per semester. Learn Python or JavaScript well, then SQL, Git, cloud basics and communication. A small finished project beats ten unfinished tutorial folders.
