Check MQA Accreditation Before You Pay a Single Ringgit
An unaccredited programme cannot be funded by PTPTN, may not qualify you for public-sector employment, and can leave a degree that no postgraduate programme will accept. Verifying accreditation takes five minutes and it is the highest-return five minutes in the whole application process.

Every legitimate higher education programme in Malaysia carries an MQA reference. The Malaysian Qualifications Agency evaluates programmes against the Malaysian Qualifications Framework and publishes the result in a public register.
If a programme is not in that register, that is not a technicality. It is a reason to walk away.
What accreditation actually protects
Funding. PTPTN only finances courses that are MOHE-approved and PTPTN-registered. Discovering in week three that your course is not fundable is a genuine crisis.
Employment. Public-sector roles, professional registration bodies and many large employers require a recognised qualification. An unaccredited degree can quietly disqualify you from the SPA, from MIA membership, from Board of Engineers registration.
Further study. Postgraduate admissions and credit transfer both depend on the qualification being recognised. An unaccredited bachelor's degree can be a dead end rather than a foundation.
Recourse. Accredited programmes sit inside a regulatory system with standards and complaint mechanisms. Unaccredited ones do not.
Provisional vs full accreditation
Two different things, and the distinction matters.
Provisional accreditation is granted before a programme has produced graduates. It confirms the programme met the standards required to start. New programmes at established universities routinely hold provisional status, and that is normal.
Full accreditation is granted after review, typically once the first cohort has completed. This is the stronger signal.
Provisional is not a red flag by itself. But you should ask the institution directly what their timeline to full accreditation is, and get the answer in writing — because your degree will be assessed under whatever status applies when you graduate.
How to verify
- Ask the institution for the programme's MQA code. A legitimate programme has one and will provide it without hesitation. Reluctance is itself the answer.
- Search the public MQA register at the agency's official portal using the programme name or the code.
- Confirm three things match: the exact programme name, the institution and campus, and the accreditation status and validity dates.
That third check catches the most common trap: an institution advertising a programme that is accredited at its main campus but running it at a branch that is not covered.
If it is not listed
Ask the institution to explain, in writing, and give a reference you can verify independently. A genuine administrative lag has a paper trail. Vagueness does not.
If you cannot verify it, do not enrol. There are accredited alternatives in every field, and the marketing pressure to decide today is not a reason to skip the check.
Programme entries on Degreemate show the MQA code where one exists — see them on any pathway page.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between provisional and full MQA accreditation?
- Provisional accreditation is granted before a programme has graduates and confirms it met the standards to start. Full accreditation follows a later review, usually after the first cohort completes, and is the stronger signal.
- What happens if my course is not MQA accredited?
- PTPTN cannot fund it, public-sector employers and professional bodies may not recognise it, and postgraduate admission or credit transfer can be refused. Verify before enrolling rather than after.

Changing University in Malaysia: Routes, Credit Transfer and Funding
There is no transfer button between Malaysian universities. You apply to the new university as a new applicant, through UPU or directly, and then ask it to transfer credits. MQA's rules require at least a grade C and 80% course equivalence, and a bachelor's student must still spend at least one year at the new university. PTPTN will only lend again at the same level once the earlier loan is settled.

Deferring University Study in Malaysia: Rules, Limits and PTPTN
Deferring is a formal application, not simply staying away. Universities such as UKM and UPM cap deferment at four semesters, and UiTM caps special leave for full-time students at two. Whether the semester still counts towards your study period depends on the university and the reason, and PTPTN does not disburse your loan for a semester you defer.

Changing Course at a Malaysian University: Rules, Steps and PTPTN
You can, but not at every university and not at any time. UKM, UPM and UTM allow one change of programme under set conditions, while UiTM's academic regulations (2021 amendment) do not allow it for full-time students. Your old CGPA is usually not carried over, and PTPTN only considers continuing your loan if the change does not make you repeat a semester.
