What to Pack for a University Hostel in Malaysia, and What Is Banned

Pack bedding, toiletries, formal and sports clothes, study gear and your documents; the room normally already has a bed, mattress, wardrobe and desk. Cooking appliances such as rice cookers are the most commonly banned items, and some colleges ban almost all electrical goods. Rules differ between colleges, so read your own residential college's list before buying anything.

Most first-year students overpack, then find half of it is either not allowed or sold at the campus shop. The better approach: find out what the room already has, pack the basics, and leave anything that plugs in until you have read the college rules.

Check what the room already has

Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan's guide for Session I 2026/2027 says each room comes with a bed, mattress, wardrobe and study desk, and that anything extra is brought by the student. UPM's Sarawak campus guide for 2026/2027 says curtains are provided, and that the college places an electric kettle and an iron on every floor for students to share.

Shared facilities matter too. UPM Sarawak lists a water filter, free WiFi, self-service laundry and a kiosk selling daily necessities. UKM said in September 2026 that every residential college has a Dapur Siswa, a shared kitchen with equipment such as rice cookers. If your college has something like this, you do not need your own.

The packing list

Sleep

  • Single bedsheet, pillow and pillowcase (UPM college rules require a sheet and pillowcase to be used at all times)
  • Thin blanket

Bathroom and laundry

  • Toiletries, towel, bathroom slippers
  • Pail and dipper
  • Hangers, clothes pegs, laundry bag, detergent

Clothes

  • Formal wear for registration and official events
  • Sports attire and sports shoes, which UPM's guide lists by name
  • Everyday clothes that meet the campus dress code
  • Prayer items if you use them

Study

  • Laptop and charger, stationery, a folder for documents
  • A padlock for your wardrobe

Health and documents

  • Personal medication and a small first-aid kit
  • Originals and copies of the documents on your registration checklist

Cleaning

  • Broom or small cleaning kit; UPM Sarawak advises students to bring items for keeping themselves and the room clean

What is commonly prohibited

These are the published rules of four institutions. They show how much the rules vary.

InstitutionAllowedNot allowed
UPM residential colleges, Serdang (college rules)Radio, phone charger, computer, printerCooking in residential blocks, pets, alcohol, drugs, obscene material, weapons, smoking
UPM Sarawak, Kolej Sri Rajang (2026/2027 guide)Shared kettle and iron provided on each floorBringing any electrical goods; knives longer than 5 inches, machetes and similar sharp tools
UTM residential colleges (electrical registration form)Iron, hair dryer, kettle, radio, toaster, phone charger, table fan, computer or laptop, each registered with the college officeWashing machine, fridge, boiler or electric water heater, microwave and hot plate, blender, air conditioner, rice cooker and multi-cooker
Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan (Session I 2026/2027 guide)Iron, plastic kettle, hair dryer, printer, laptop, USB study lamp, USB fan, electric mosquito repellent, sewing machineExtension cord, rice cooker, wok, toaster, multi-cooker, electric thermos, 3-pin plug adaptor, vape, cigarettes

Three patterns stand out.

  • Cooking appliances are banned almost everywhere. A rice cooker appears on the prohibited list at UTM and Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, and UPM bans cooking in the blocks altogether. UMT has issued a similar notice for its colleges.
  • The same item can be allowed in one place and banned in another. A toaster can be registered at UTM but is prohibited at Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan.
  • Allowed does not mean unconditional. UTM requires permitted appliances to be registered at the college office each semester, and says unregistered items can be fined and confiscated.

Private universities set their own rules as well. UNITEN's accommodation handbook permits only the appliances on its approved list, and UTP's residential rules state that cooking in the hostel is not allowed. Whatever you bring, you remain subject to the college rules and the university's discipline rules for as long as you stay.

Buy these after you arrive

  • Bulky, cheap items: pail, hangers, broom, laundry basket, storage boxes. Campus kiosks and co-op shops sell them; both UPM Sarawak and Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan mention one on site.
  • Anything electrical. Read the rules, see what your roommates already have, then decide.
  • Extra bedding or a fan, once you know how the room actually feels.
  • Programme items such as lab coats or drawing tools. Your faculty will tell you the exact specification.

Two practical points

Label your belongings, and agree with your roommates early on who brings shared items. Then plan the cost: the hostel fee is only part of what first-year living costs, which is covered in the hidden costs guide. If money is tight, read the part-time work guide before committing to a job, and get ready for orientation week, which usually starts the moment you check in.

Rules differ by college and are updated from time to time; your own residential college's current list is the one to follow.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring a rice cooker to a university hostel?
Usually not. Rice cookers are on the prohibited list at UTM's residential colleges and at Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, and UPM bans cooking in residential blocks. Some universities provide shared kitchens instead, such as UKM's Dapur Siswa; check your own college's rules.
What does a university hostel room usually provide?
Basic furniture. Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan's 2026/2027 guide lists a bed, mattress, wardrobe and study desk in each room, and UPM Sarawak's guide says curtains are provided. Bedding and personal items are normally yours to bring.
Are kettles and irons allowed in residential colleges?
It depends on the college. UTM allows a kettle and an iron if they are registered with the college office, Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan allows an iron and a plastic kettle, and UPM Sarawak does not allow students to bring electrical goods but provides a shared kettle and iron on each floor.
What should I buy only after arriving at the hostel?
Bulky low-cost items such as a pail, hangers and a broom, and anything electrical. Campus kiosks and co-op shops sell the basics, and waiting lets you read the rules and see what your roommates already have.

University Grading Systems in Malaysia Compared: Grade Points by University

Malaysian universities all use a 4.00 scale, but the points behind each letter differ: A- is 3.67 at UiTM, UKM, UTM and IIUM, 3.70 at UM and 3.750 at UPM. Only some scales have an A+, the pass grade ranges from C to D, and unlike SPM every grade is weighted by credit hours.
