ASASIpintar UKM Requirements: SPM Grades, Interview and How to Apply

If you are searching for "Asasi UKM", there is one answer: ASASIpintar. UKM's academic office lists only two levels of intake, ASASIpintar for SPM leavers and bachelor's degrees for STPM, matriculation and diploma holders. The facts below are from e-Panduan UPUOnline and UKM's own entry documents for the 2026/2027 academic session, and they may change next cycle.

What it is

ASASIpintar UKM (UPU code UK0010001) is a pre-university programme run by Pusat PERMATA@Pintar Negara at UKM's Bangi campus. UKM describes it as a programme for selected students with high intellectual potential, combining theory, practical work and research courses.

• Duration: two semesters, one year.
• Campus: Kampus Bangi, Selangor.
• Intake: once a year. UKM's FAQ says ASASIpintar students register in July.

The published course list for 2026/2027 is science-heavy: Biology, Physics and Chemistry across both semesters, plus Logical Reasoning, Statistics, Research Skills, Vector Calculus and a Research Project. It is a science foundation with a research component. It is not a general or arts foundation.

Who can apply

The UPU FAQ for 2026/2027 lists "Asasi UKM" among the foundation programmes open to all qualified candidates. Unlike the foundation programmes at UiTM, UM's PASUM or UIAM, e-Panduan shows no descent condition for ASASIpintar. You need to be a Malaysian citizen with a MyKad.

In the 2026 e-Panduan, ASASIpintar appears under Kategori A, for current-year SPM leavers. It is not in the Kategori B list.

Minimum SPM requirements (2026/2027 session)

UKM's general requirement for foundation entry is Malaysian citizenship and SPM with at least five credits including Bahasa Melayu, and a pass in Sejarah.

The special requirement is short and demanding. You need at least A- in all seven of these subjects:

You must also pass the test and/or interview set by Pusat PERMATA@Pintar Negara. e-Panduan marks this as an interview programme.

The average merit shown in e-Panduan was 94.99%. That figure is not a cut-off, and e-Panduan warns that an offer also depends on your rank, the number of places and the interview. Check your own score with the merit calculator.

One practical point: this requirement needs all three pure sciences. If you did not take Biology, you do not meet it, however strong the rest of your results are.

Fees published for 2026/2027

UKM's programme list for 2026/2027 states RM1,495 for semester 1 and RM830 for semester 2. That covers tuition and services but not residential college fees, applies only to students admitted through UPU, and is subject to change. The amount on your offer letter is the one that counts.

Where it leads

ASASIpintar is not marked as a feeder programme in e-Panduan, so UPU does not tie you to UKM for your degree.

UKM's programme brochure says graduates continue to a bachelor's degree at a public university, based on their examination results and faculty interviews. It describes two application routes: directly to UKM faculties, except the Faculty of Islamic Studies, and through UPU. The faculty you apply to makes the decision, so a degree place is not automatic. The brochure is dated 2023, so confirm the current arrangement with the centre.

How and when to apply

1. Buy a UPUOnline PIN from Bank Simpanan Nasional. It cost RM10.60 for 2026/2027.
2. Register at upu.mohe.gov.my under Kategori A.
3. Add ASASIpintar UKM to your choices. The UPU FAQ says choices 1 to 4 are reserved for interview programmes, so it has to sit in that range.
4. Fill at least six choices, submit and save the slip. Then watch for the test or interview notice.

For 2026/2027, applications for SPM leavers ran from 29 January to 13 April 2026. The window opened before SPM results; UPU matches your real grades later and you update your choices. Do not confuse this with the UKM1 and UKM2 screening tests. Those are for the centre's school-age talent search. SPM leavers enter ASASIpintar through UPU.

Who it suits

ASASIpintar suits you if you took all three pure sciences, expect at least A- in the seven named subjects, and like the idea of doing research this early. Because one interview programme occupies one of your first four UPU choices, plan the rest with care. Other science foundations to rank alongside it are Asasi Sains Pertanian UPM, which is also open to all qualified candidates, and for Bumiputera students Asasi UM and Asasi UiTM.
